One-off Ferrari SP12 EC - named after Eric Clapton

15.06.2012
Ferrari has just created a special one-off car, the SP12 EC, in homage to famed guitarist Eric Clapton’s career and his long-lasting passion for Ferraris.

Clapton wished for the car to be based on a Ferrari 458 Italia but in a style reminiscent of the 512 BB and the early '80s.

Obliging him, the SP12EC was designed using those two models for reference by the Ferrari Style Centre in collaboration with Pininfarina and Maranello’s engineers. No technical specs have yet been officially released by the Italian automaker, but some sources report that the 458's 4.5L V8 engine sits under the hood. The total cost also remains vague, with estimates ranging from €3.8M to €4.5M ($4.9M to $5.8M).

Clapton said that the one-off Ferrari was ‘an incredible experience, one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done.” Clapton’s garage is already filled with a whole collection of classic Ferraris; he is as attached to them as he is to his guitars! “My favourite car is the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. I’ve had it for about 40 years and I adore it. It’s a gorgeous car.

The biggest, and the one that I drive most often, is the 612 Scaglietti. I also have a 599 that everyone thinks is better, but I personally prefer the 612. It’s a superb car” Eric said in an interview for The Official Ferrari Magazine in January 2010.
